Getting to Know: Zavier Brown, Cathedral WR

CPVCDRnUsAAQCZg

Birthday: I was born December 30, 1998.

What is your greatest memory so far as a high school player?

The greatest memory I’ve had was playing my first varsity down as a freshman.

What motivates you to play football?

My motivation to play is just the love of playing sports and I told myself that my momma will not pay for college, so getting an athletic scholarship is the goal.

Have you had any family members who have played?

My dad was a pretty good high school player in Texas, that’s originally where I’m from.

Have you had any recruiting attention lately and what do you seek in a school?

I have n0 offers and I have not been on any college visits. I want to go to a D1 college, preferably in the Midwest. Also a nice campus and hopefully they offer what I want to major in.

Giants primed for a state championship run

Yesterday, Ben Davis Head Coach Mike Kirschner pushed out a Tweet about the team’s success with sending Giants to the college ranks:

“1.1 million high school football players in 2015 – 6.5% go to college to play football at Ben Davis we send 41% to play college football.”

The athleticism on this team (as well as all of the top 6A teams) is staggering.  It’s arguable that the Giants have never looked as stacked as they are heading into 2016. With two top prospects on the defensive line (LeShaun Minor, Esezi Otomewo), an SEC commit at left tackle (Pompey Coleman) and a guard with one offer (Ahmad Malone), three dynamic wide receivers with college offers (Johnny Adams, Azjai Cooper, Noah Thomas), a shutdown cornerback (Jontae Dobson), a dual-threat signal caller (Reese Taylor), and a host of other players who will draw the attention of recruiters by the time the dust settles in the fall, the Giants looked primed for a state championship.

What is your birthday?

My birthday is Nov. 13, 1998.

What is your greatest memory so far as a high school player?

The greatest memory as a high school player so far is running out to Lucas Oil Stadium during the 6A state championship game with my teammates and brothers. And being able to play in such a big game was one of the greatest experiences of my life. There is no other feeling like that.

What motivates you to play football?

What motivates me to play football is just my love and passion for the game. I fell in love with the sport at a young age, and ever since, I can’t get enough.

Do you have any family members who have played?

My dad played in college for Weber State.

Have you had any recruiting attention lately?

With finals and AP testing I haven’t visited a college yet. Three Ivy League schools and some MAC schools have visited the school and we met.  I am scheduled to visit Weber State and Hillsdale in the next month.

What are you looking for in a school?

I am built on a foundation with four corner stones. Family, faith, academics, and football. I am looking for a school that can help me build and progress in all of those areas.

New Warren Central WR flying under the radar

o5NxxxLY_200x200

Former Lawrence Central wide receiver Dominique Tyler is physically strong, flashes good hands in a crowd and excels after the catch, where he has vision to get upfield, makes defenders miss and shakes off would-be tackles for yards after contact.  He also makes a very strong impact on special teams – he flashes nice edge speed and has a good extra gear as a return man.  He tells IndyScout that one of his favorite memories was returning a kickoff for a touchdown last season against Cathedral immediately after top running back Markese Stepp ran for an 80-yard touchdown.

The 5’9″ 150 WR transferred to Warren Central, where he will play with a legitimate quarterback prospect in Zach Summeier this fall.  He currently holds no offers.

2018 Under-the-Radar: Fishers WR Will Syrus

Syrus is on the verge of a breakout season.  At 6’2” and built with a long frame, he’s a big target for the Tigers.  He can adjust to the ball, high-pointing mid-air and digging off-target passes out of the dirt.  He explosively comes off the line of scrimmage and flashes enough long speed to be a legitimate Division I target.

Out of 53 receivers, Will finished third in the 40-yard dash at the Best of the Midwest Combine.  He was also #5 in pro-shuttle, #4 in L-Cone, and #3 in broad jump – the only wide receiver in the top 5 at every drill.  Syrus’ father played football at St. Francis.  He was invited to Indiana for the Rutgers game in October.  Expect offers to come soon.

Marsh commits to Ball State

Ball State landed their second in-state commit late Wednesday night, with Chatard defensive end David Marsh deciding to become a Cardinal.  Marsh was offered by Ball State on May 5.  They were his first and only offer.

“Just the atmosphere is great there and the education I’m looking for, which is architecture or business, is very good there, so that’s what I’m glad about,” Marsh tells IndyScout.  “It’s an amazing feeling and I’m ready for the journey ahead from here.”

Marsh comes from the defending 5A state championship team.  His size (6’4” 240), edge speed, pursuit to the flat, quickness to shed blocks and ability to be a multiple-move, dynamic pass rusher are all qualities that shine on tape.  Marsh is the second Indiana player heading to Muncie next year, with the other being Tri West WR Peyton Hendershot.

What is your birthday?

My birthday is August 28, 1998.

What is your greatest memory as a high school player so far?

My greatest memory was running out on to Lucas oil and getting to start for a state championship game.

What motivates you to play football?

What motivates me is to be good enough to get my college paid for or mostly covered, and to be able to fulfill a lifelong goal.

Do you have any relatives who have played?

My dad played for a small school called Laville and went on to play basketball at Bethel College. My brother was a WR on the 2011 state runner up Penn team and went on to do track and cross country at Bethel College. Football is a big sport in our family.

Have you had any recruiting activity lately?

I went to a Hillsdale Jr Day on April 24th. I plan on going to Hillsdale’s camp in July. I will goto University of Penn’s camp and Bucknell Camp.  I will go to the UIndy camp on May 22, and I will go to Cornell early to meet with coach and then go to camp the next day.

What are you looking for in a school?

What I’m looking for is that if the college has political science, and is a well-known academic school. I want to be able to have great job opportunities coming out of college because of my degree and the university it’s from.

Birthday: 3/31/1998

What is your greatest memory so far as a high school player?

Greatest memory is playing Western for the last time and winning 38-20 and having 2 INTs for TD’s.

What motivates you to play the game?

It’s easy for me to get motivated for football. But I’d say just wanting to improve every day and getting better would be my biggest motivations.

Do you have any family members who have played?

I had one brother play at Trine.

Have you had any recruiting attention lately?

Indiana State and Valpo came to see me. St. Francis, too. And I’ll be visiting Albany this summer. Northern Arizona has reached out to me and so has Colgate.

What are you looking for in a school?

I’m looking for a college that has a good academic program. Football isn’t going to last forever so having a good degree is very important. And having a good feel to the school, I wanna feel at home.

The Opening – Zavier Brown, Indianapolis Cathedral

CPVCDRnUsAAQCZg

Several top Indiana recruits are competing at The Opening in Illinois today, and several were Ohio last week. Some of them reflected upon their time via interviews.  This is the first in a multi-part post series over the next few weeks.

Zavier Brown – Results

Height: 5-9.5, Weight: 176, 40-4.46, Shuttle: 4.64, Vertical: 41

Brown timed in at 4.46 in the 40 and had a 41-inch vertical. Brown is a shifty receiver in space and a versatile athlete. He is flying under the radar as a prospect.

“I didn’t know any of the top prospects there until I left so playing with and against them was fun,” Brown told IndyScout. “Also, there was some good coaching. I definitely learned some things I can use during the season.”

What is your birthday?

September 9th, 1998

What is your greatest memory as a high school player?

My greatest memory so far was the game against Fishers. Coming back from 28-0 was a huge accomplishment for our team, not to mention against our cross-town rivals.

What motivates you to play the game?

My motivation to play comes from playing the game for so many years. There’s no better feeling than stepping on the field Friday nights with my brothers.

Do you have any family members who have played?

Yes, my brother played at DePauw for a couple years.

Have you had any recruiting attention lately?

I have one offer from Davenport. The Columbia coach as well as the Harvard coach have come in to talk to me. The Penn coach said he will be visiting tomorrow as well. I plan on attending camp out at Columbia and Penn this summer.

What are you looking for in a college?

I’m looking for a college that can develop me to become the best football player I can be. I’m also looking for a school that will prepare me for life after football. Academics are a huge part of my decision.
