2016 Under-the-Radar: Dushan Shepeard, Cathedral WR

Shepeard has size that college teams covet. He’s a big target at 6’3” 190, and is effective within Cathedral’s offense as a possession WR. Dushan is also a good blocker, exhibiting good technique and creating running lanes on the perimeter.

Redhawks land four Indiana recruits

Based on their recruiting, Miami of Ohio sees the upward trajectory of Indiana high school football. Their staff has landed four Indiana recruits, the most by any out-of-state team. They have scoured the state in search for talent. Ohio tends to be rich football country, especially among MAC schools. Within their 2016 class, Indiana is second only to Georgia (6).

The Redhawks landed two of the state’s offensive lineman in Bishop Chatard OL Danny Godlevsky and Decatur Central OL Trent Maynard. Maynard is ranked on 247Sports as the top offensive lineman coming out of Indiana and committed last week. They also snagged Bishop Luers QB Noah Wezensky, as well as electrifying playmaker Stori Emerson from Ben Davis.

What is your birthday?

My birthday is March 7,1999

What is your greatest memory as a high school player?

My greatest memory is beating Bloomington South in our 2014 semi-state game. We won in OT and stormed the field.

What motivates you to play football?

Football is something I love. It’s something that I have put all of my hardwork and dedication into. Football is all about brotherhood. It’s pretty cool knowing that my teammates and I are all trying to achieve the same goal. This motivates me because everything that I do affects my teammates.

Do you have any family members who have played?

My dad, Brian, played at Roncalli High School and DE for Butler University. My uncle, Devin, played at Roncalli and then WR at Butler. My uncle, Sean, played at Roncalli and O-line for the University of Indianapolis. My great uncle, Brad Crawford, played DB for Frankin College and was inducted into the college football hall of fame in 2001. My brother, Bo, played CB on Cathedral’s freshman team this year.

Any recruiting attention lately?

I have visited IU, Purdue, Northwestern, and Miami (OH) so far. I plan to schedule visits in the off-season.  I visited in the Q/A, the University of Virginia, Toledo, Maryland, Penn, and Columbia have shown interest so far.

What are you looking for in a school?

I am looking for a college that will give me lifelong connections. I want to build relationships with my coaches and professors. I want to obtain a degree that will allow me to do well in life once my football career is over.

Evaluation: 2017 OL Ahmad Malone, Ben Davis

Size: 6’4”, 270

Grade: 3

Exposures: Junior Film, In-person game v. Pike

Strengths: Excellent size – looks the part with the physical measurables to excel in Division I.  Has length and base strength to anchor.  Very effective run blocker, both along the line of scrimmage and in space – can pull, trap, and strike a moving target at the LOS.  Can fire forward, work to the second level, square up and attack linebackers.  Exhibits good inside hand placement, plays with a wide base, and exhibits a nice lateral set.  Is instinctive – reads and reacts to pressure; can feel defenders, post back inside, and pick up blitzing linebackers.  Has upside with the frame and room to grow.  Plays in a winning program.

Weaknesses: Tends to lunge and bend at the waist on contact as a run blocker, with pads first instead of hands.  Plays a bit high and needs to continue to bend at the knees and maintain leverage.  Can be slow out of his stance at the snap at times.

Summary: Ahmad’s size, hand placement, instincts, and effectiveness as a run blocker make him a legitimate Division I prospect.  He plays within a unit that has been very successful in the past, creating running lanes for Michigan commit Chris Evans.

2016 Under-the-Radar: Maverick Schultz, Winamac LB

N7CTLSFB_400x400

Maverick Schultz (52) quietly had a strong season for Winamac. He was a Class 1A Junior All-State last year. He finished 2015 with a strong senior campaign – 152 tackles and three forced fumbles. On tape, the 6’0” senior has a strong frame with room to grow.  He is a nice lateral mover who keeps his shoulders square, flows to the ball, and exhibits twitchy instincts.

2016 Under-the-Radar: Evan Christopher, Cathedral RB

imgres

Despite losing last week, Evan Christopher stepped up big for the Irish. With Markese Stepp out with a concussion and big shoes to fill, the 6’0”, 225-pound RB had 22 carries for 128 yards. He continued to play despite leaving the game at one point due to an injury. Christopher normally served as Stepp’s lead blocker at fullback. He is an excellent north-south pounder who likes contact – he can break through tackles and stay on his feet as well as anybody – but he is also shifty in space, and Cathedral liked to use him in the passing game.
